“The personality of a house is indefinable, but there never lived a lady of great cultivation and charm whose home, whether a palace, a farm-cottage or a tiny apartment, did not reflect the charm of its owner.”—Emily Post
have you heard of the Academy of Art University, in San Francisco? (not sure where in the world you're from so perhaps not) but if so, do you know anything about their interior design program? I'm considering going there but tuition is crazy expensive and I want to make sure it's worth it. or do you know of any other interior design schools with raving reviews?
I’m in Europe and I barely know the schools here ^_^ But if someone knows about this school please share it with us or Carolyn in particular.
Tuition is crazy expensive in most interior design/art schools unfortunately and there are not enough scholarships:/ Try to find students from there and ask about their experience or even ask designers. From my experience I can tell that many interior designers are very approachable if you ask for advice (unless they are super famous probably ^_^). So try to see if there are interior designers who came from that school or try to find where designers you admire studied:)
Last September, I enrolled in an Interior Decorating diploma program. I finished two semesters, with a 90% average. Yet.. I am apprehensive about going back for the last two semesters. My profs weren't encouraging, and would basically suppress individual creativity. Needless to say.. I was wondering if you have any advice on how to take steps in this industry. I know it is highly competitive, and that's why I'm questioning the program. Thanks and i hope to hear back from you.
I’m not the best person to tell how to get into the industry in detail because I haven’t reached that phase yet and each country has a different reality, but getting an intership seems to me like an essential step.
About your diploma I guess you could talk to students who already did it and ask if they felt the same? Or talk to a professor you trust about how you are feeling. Getting a 90% average seems good to me, maybe you are not feeling challenged? How long is the diploma? Two years? Do you have the time/money to enrol in some drawing classes or something creative so you’d have a place to let it go?
Send me an email and maybe we can discuss it more in detail:)*
What classes do you need to take to work as an interior designer? What classes would prepare you the most?
Classes? Well, the reality of what is required depends a lot of the country you are going to work and its specific rules. There are 3/4 year degrees in interior design and sometimes 1 year courses more targeted for people who have previous education or experience on it. But the truth is that you’ll need proper education no matter where you’ll work (today is harder to get away with just “good eye”, some well known designers did it because they started a long time ago or they are not designers but decorators) and on top of that you may have to pass some exams made specifically to assess interior designers capability of working so clients have guarantees of quality.
It’s not rocket science but it’s demanding in terms of the scope of things you should learn. I tend to see an interior designer more like a project manager, because you won’t be able to implement your creative ideas unless you know how to organize and prioritize the whole process and project.
*I added this comment (thank you^_^) because it really focus on what I wrote above:
agreenseason said: It’s much easier to become a “stylist” or “decorator” without a degree if you just have the eye for that. As a commercial designer - which is what I do - you need a design degree, a few years of experience, and you NDICQ.
The Anon looking for Etsy art--I've got a mostly photography shop (GallivantingGirl) and can print up to 20x30 inch prints at very affordable prices--and I wholeheartedly agree with the Wimberley, Texas comment. Very neat art there!
For the anon looking for Texas art: wimberly is a small town south of Austin which has a small shopping district with lots of local art. They had some fantastic pieces when I went. There is even a glass blowing shop off of the downtown area there
could you recommend some art to look at from Etsy, such as a specific shop? Or somewhere to get good art from Texas?
Etsy is big and I’ve tried to look for quality items there too and it is a struggle. There’s a lot of bad stuff (at least that was my experience) in the middle of some interesting objects but it takes a lot of time to find good items. I can’t give you names or suggestions on Etsy or Texas but if someone has please feel free to share. Good luck!*
Hello, I'm redoing an appartement I just bought and I'm looking for good bathroom inspiration website/blog... got any idea?Love your blog girl!
I got a few messages asking the same thing, so please check house to home (living etc mag publishes their images here now) for some bathroom inspiration. There’s more than 500 images there:)* And thank you;)
I’ve received a few messages questioning me about this so I feel I should publicly clarify you all.
I did change my url slightly by deleting the hyphen but this is the only blog I own about interior design. Other websites or blogs with a similar name are not mine at all. This blog was created on the 21st of July, 2010 (wow kind of old by internet standards I guess ^_^) and is curated and managed by me and just me.
We recently bought a big old house that needs lots of TLC. Sometimes I get disheartened when people point out everything that needs work. Then I drop by here and remember why we fell in love with our house in the first place. Thank you for reminding me that imperfection can also be perfection : )
Not everybody has the capacity to see the possibilities and face the adventure of a house like yours;)*
Interiors Porn was offered the opportunity to share images from the finalists’ projects of the Belle/Coco Republic Interior Design Awards 2012 that will take place in Sydney, Australia on the 16th of May.
You’ll see images from those projects during next week and then the winner will also be revealed here.
